The Kaduna State Government, led by Governor Uba Sani, has reaffirmed its dedication to combating malnutrition in the state. This commitment was expressed by Hon. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman, Steering Committee on Food and Nutrition and Commissioner for Planning and Budget Commission, during a one-day Nutrition Stakeholders meeting held at the PBC Conference Hall in Kaduna.
He said state government has taken significant steps to address malnutrition, including creating a dedicated budget line for nutrition in the 2025 appropriation bill at the Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Board. Additionally, Kaduna State now has a designated Chairman for the House Committee on Nutrition, and desk officers have been appointed across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to coordinate nutrition efforts as well as a substantial allocation of ₦50 million has been earmarked for nutrition activities at the Primary Healthcare Board.
Hon. Mukhtar Ahmed congratulated the state’s dedicated team and partners for the significant progress reflected in the recently released NDHS 2023-2024 data. These achievements demonstrate the hard work and unwavering dedication of the Nutrition Team, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as development partners.
The commissioner highlighted notable improvements made by Kaduna State in 2023-2024, including:
Decline in Stunting Rates*: Severe cases of stunting have decreased to 16.8%, down from 22.10% in 2018.
Reduction in Severe Wasting*: Severe wasting has dropped to 0.3%, a decrease from 1.1% in 2018.
Decrease in Severe Underweight*: The rate of severe underweight has fallen to 6.0%, down from 7.60% in 2018.
He emphasized that these achievements are commendable and deserving of recognition for the collaborative efforts that have brought the state this far. However, as the state celebrates these successes, it must remain vigilant, as the journey toward eliminating malnutrition is ongoing ¹.
The Chairman State Committee on Food and Nutrition (SCFN) Bashir Muhammed mni explained that the essence of the gathering was to to bring together stakeholders to advocate and sensitive them on the need for sustained efforts in fighting malnutrition in kaduna state,
During the meeting, representatives of development partners delivered goodwill messages, commending the governor for his efforts in fighting malnutrition.
A brilliant presentation was delivered by the State Nutrition Officer on the Overview of Nutrition Status in Kaduna State, as well as a details presentation on Resource Mobilization on strategy for Nutrition Financing in the State by the State Coordinator CS-SUNN
The meeting was attended by notable stakeholders, including the Chairman of the House Committee on Food and Nutrition, Chairman House Committee on Agriculture, GM KADA, State Coordination National Primary Healthcare Board, representive of the Commissioner of Education, representive from CS-SUNN, GAIN, SCT, SFH, Mulism World League,.representive of Executive Secretary @SPHCB and relevant stakeholders.
